INTERVIEWER: Let’s start by hearing a little about your CHAMA and how it all began.
JANE: Sure thing! Our chama is like a friendly group that I started with some friends who think alike. We all really like working together, and we figured out that we can do bigger and better things if we join forces and work together on different projects.
INTERVIEWER: That’s really cool! One of the things you’ve done well is having these charity auctions. Can you explain how they work and what they do to help you raise money?
JANE: Of course! Charity auctions with goodgoods are a big part of how we get money for our projects. Every month, we pick some things from goodgoods and let people bid on them. Whoever bids the most gets the item. The money we make from these auctions goes straight into our savings for things we want to do later.
INTERVIEWER: That’s pretty awesome! Can you tell us about a recent auction and how it made a difference?
JANE: Sure thing! In our last auction, we decided to do something special. We usually choose different things from goodgoods so it’s always interesting. This time, we put up a brand new fridge for auction. The community response was amazing! People came not just to bid but also to support our cause. Even people online were excited about it. We raised a lot of money, and even though a stranger made the final bid, it really showed how bidding can really help out.
INTERVIEWER: That’s really heartwarming! What kind of challenges have you faced in setting up these auctions, and how did you handle them?
JANE: Using the internet to do the bidding part makes things pretty easy, to be honest. The only thing we had to explain at first was that the participation fee was a small amount that goes to us like a donation. And the person who wins the bid actually has to pay for the thing they won.
INTERVIEWER: Communication is key, right? How often do you hold these auctions, and how do you keep people interested and involved?
JANE: We have these charity auctions every month. To keep things exciting, we give each month a different theme. We pick ideas from seasons, holidays, and special times. Because the cost to take part is small, a lot of people are interested. We also share about it online, and everyone in our chama group tells their friends too. We also show everyone who won in the past, so everyone knows what’s going on.
You can engage in fundraising through charity auctions to support various causes, such as covering school fees, medical expenses, personal needs, or chamas, among others.
